Switchboard Upgrades

Old ceramic fuses swapped for a modern board with safety switches on every circuit. Compliant, tested and certified before we pack up.

If your board still has ceramic fuses with fuse wire, or breakers that trip every time the kettle and the heater go on together, the board is the problem and not the appliances. A switchboard upgrade brings the whole house up to a modern standard with a safety switch protecting every circuit.

When a board needs replacing

Most homes across the eastern suburbs built before the mid 1990s still have the original board. Rewirable ceramic fuses do not trip fast enough to protect a person, and there is usually no room left to add a circuit for a new oven, an air conditioner or a shed. If any of the following sounds like your place, it is worth an inspection.

  • Ceramic fuses with fuse wire rather than circuit breakers
  • Breakers that trip regularly, or a main switch that trips the whole house
  • No safety switch, or a single safety switch covering only the power points
  • A board with no spare ways left for a new circuit
  • Scorch marks, a burning smell, buzzing or heat coming off the board
  • A meter box that has been added to over the years and is now a mess of tails

What the upgrade includes

We quote the job properly before we start, so you know what you are getting. A standard upgrade covers the board itself, the safety switches, the labelling and the compliance paperwork.

  • New enclosure sized with spare capacity for future circuits
  • A residual current device protecting every final subcircuit, lighting included
  • Circuit breakers correctly rated to each circuit
  • Main switch, surge protection where it makes sense and clear circuit labelling
  • Testing of every circuit before we leave
  • A Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work

How long it takes

Most domestic boards are a one day job. Power is off while we work and we will tell you at the quote roughly how long that will be so you can plan around it. Larger homes, three phase supplies and boards that need the meter or the supply authority involved take longer, and we will say so up front rather than discovering it on the day.

Common questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on how many circuits you have, the condition of the existing wiring and whether the meter box itself needs work. We look at the board, tell you what it needs and give you a price before anything starts.

Will my power be off?

Yes, for the working part of the day. We let you know at the quote roughly how long, so you can move anything in the freezer and plan around it.

Do I legally need a safety switch?

Victorian rules require residual current devices on new and altered circuits, and any board we replace gets them across the whole installation. Even where an old board is technically allowed to stay, the safety case for replacing it is the reason most people call.
